Glover Garden
See How the Merchants Once Lived
Minami-Yamate’s Glover Garden is on a hill that many Western merchants once called home. Among the nine old houses in the garden are three National Important Cultural Properties, including the Former Glover House, which is Japan’s oldest Western-style wooden building, and the Former Ringer House. Also, six Meiji-era Western-style buildings from locations around Nagasaki were relocated to Glover Garden, then they were restored and converted into museums.
The garden blooms with different flowers in each season, and the stone paving and steps retain the atmosphere of when the area was a foreign settlement. This renowned site is only a ten-minute walk from Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street.
Oura Church
Japan’s oldest church is majestic
Oura Church is the oldest Christian church in Japan. It was designed by Father Petitjean, who also designed Maria-en, which has now been reborn as the Main Building of Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street.
Five colours of light shine into the church through its stunning stained glass windows, giving the space a majestic atmosphere. Oura Church is about a ten-minute walk from Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street.
